Empowering Women in Chemistry - FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Just what is the difference between the WCC and the WIC?
The WCC is an organization of the ACS which extends beyond just the U of I campus, encompassing all of eastern Illinois. On the other hand, the WIC is more for female chemists specifically on the U of I campus. However, due to the obvious overlap in the interests of these two groups, often times, we work collaboratively to co-sponsor events, such as the annual Retreat for Graduate Women in Chemistry.
Specifically the WCC seeks to address the following goals, which can also be seen on their website:
- Attract women to a profession in the chemical sciences
- Take an advocacy position within the ACS on issues of importance to women in the chemical sciences
- Provide leadership for career development opportunities for women in the chemical sciences
- Promote and recognize the professional accomplishments of women in the chemical sciences.
Are men invited to WCC events?
Of course! The vast majority of our events are department-wide, so all students, faculty and staff are invited to attend. Men are also encouraged to attend our meetings.
Do I have to attend WCC meetings in order to go to WCC events?
No! We advertise our events on the departmental bulletin boards as well as on our website. When events have limited seating, spots are first opened up to registered members and then department-wide.
In that case, how do I register? Is there a membership fee?
You can join WCC by contacting us to be added to the WCC email list. Membership is free, as are the majority of our events.
Do you have a question for the WCC? Please email us! Maybe your question will be included on this page too!
