Description

(CHEM 109) Companion laboratory course to CHEM 202. Comprehensive skills-oriented approach to learning laboratory technique and safety.

Chemistry 203's main purpose is to develop the student's understanding of the methods used to analyze the composition and identity of chemical systems. In performing the six experiments in the course, comprehension of calculations and data analysis procedures is only one of our educational goals. Students are expected to learn and/or improve their techniques in handling pipets and other glassware, titrating unknowns, accurate solution preparation, and in working with LabWorks, a computer data acquisition and analysis software system. LabWorks will be used in two experiments to gather data from an experiment as it is being performed in lab. Later, students will analyze their data on a spreadsheet. The computer facilitates graphing large sets of data and taking more precise measurements of pH and volume. Students will also be introduced to the use of chemical reference material, such as the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics and the Merck Index.

Credits

(2 hours) Students with credit in CHEM 203 can receive credit for CHEM 222, but not for CHEM 121 or 223.
